One of the many splendoured joys of the BBC’s Great British Bake Off is watching the contestants attempt to make a mystery baked good in the Technical Challenge, aided only by a deliberately vague recipe and unhelpful directions from steely Paul Hollywood and blessed Mary Berry. To keep things confusing and complicated, the wiley producers often choose French cakes and breads, knowing that the French are experts in patisserie (and making things confusing and complicated I LOVE YOU FRANCE I AM JOKING). Levels of delightfulness are notched up further when presenters Mel and Sue use this as an excuse to do their comedy French accents.
It’s with this in mind that I’ve made my own French patisserie challenge. Can you identify the 10 classic French cakes below using only a picture and a description, thus earning either admiration or approbation from Paul and Mary? Ready, steady, NAME THAT FRENCH CAKE!
